Buried But Not Dead

Genesis 49:1-4

1 ¶ And Jacob called his sons and said, “Gather together, that I may tell you what shall befall you in the last days:

2 “Gather together and hear, you sons of Jacob, And listen to Israel your father.

3 “Reuben, you are my firstborn, My might and the beginning of my strength, The excellency of dignity and the excellency of power.

4 Unstable as water, you shall not excel, Because you went up to your father’s bed; Then you defiled it -He went up to my couch.

It is not everything that is buried in this world that is dead. Many things are like fire in this world; they cannot be swept under the carpet. Some things are forgotten, but they have refused to pass; they still run after people like their shadows. Some seeds sown yesterday are refusing to die but they are wickedly producing bitter fruits that are making today meaningless and are also endangering tomorrow.

The yesterday of a man is what has produced his today and it is certain that the tomorrow of all of us will ultimately be produced by our today. Many errors of yesterday look absolutely harmless; at least when men are committing them but they developed with time to mess up great destinies of great men.

Such was the story of Reuben, the first born of the patriarch, Jacob.

From the story of Reuben, we shall see that many things we have swept under our carpet must quickly be exposed and seriously dealt with before the time bomb exposed and our destinies are wrecked.

  1. Smart But Stupid

When Reuben chose to sleep with his father’s wife, he taught he was playing a smart game.

Gen 35:22

22 And it happened, when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father’s concubine; and Israel heard about it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve

What could have pushed Reuben to commit such a heinous crime?

  1. Untamed wild passion
  2. Youthful exuberance
  • Demonic manipulations

The crime that Reuben committed was grievous; but the fact that he covered it up was much more deadly.

If you fall into sin, please, do not cover it up.

The strength of sin is in the propensity of man to cover it up.

Gen 3:8-13

8 And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.

9 ¶ Then the LORD God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?”

10 So he said, “I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself.”

11 ¶ And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?”

12 Then the man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate.”

13 And the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

Two things made the sin of Adam and his wife much more grievous than it really was here:

  1. They were hiding it
  2. They were trading blames

The best way to bury sin and errors of life is to expose them. To cover them up is postpone the evil till a later date. When that later date eventually comes, they pains will be great.

Esau committed an error and swept it under the carpet.

Heb 12:16-17

16 lest there be any fornicator or profane person like Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright.

17 For you know that afterward, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought it diligently with tears.

The right time to cry and seek for help is when the error is committed. If you wait till nemesis catch up with you the damage may be irreparable.

  1. Repentance and Restitution is the Key

Those who expose themselves to God will always be covered by Him.

Pro 28:13

13 ¶ He who covers his sins will not prosper, But whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy.

Psa 32:3-5

3 When I kept silent, my bones grew old Through my groaning all the day long.

4 For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; My vitality was turned into the drought of summer. Selah

5 I acknowledged my sin to You, And my iniquity I have not hidden. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,” And You forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah

Jer 2:22-23

22 For though you wash yourself with lye, and use much soap, Yet your iniquity is marked before Me,” says the Lord GOD.

23 “How can you say, ‘I am not polluted, I have not gone after the Baals’? See your way in the valley; Know what you have done: You are a swift dromedary breaking loose in her ways

The wise thing to do is to come to God when mercy is still possible.

Today is such a day that mercy is possible.

  1. Get the help now

It is terrible for any man to wait until the evils covered become deadly explosives before dealing with them.

Today, you can cry to God.

Today you can make your way right.

Today you can seek genuine help.

Today, you can break the yokes on your life once and for all.

Mic 7:18-19

18 Who is a God like You, Pardoning iniquity And passing over the transgression of the remnant of His heritage? He does not retain His anger forever, Because He delights in mercy.

19 He will again have compassion on us, And will subdue our iniquities. You will cast all our sins Into the depths of the sea.

Jer 50:20

20 In those days and in that time,” says the LORD, “The iniquity of Israel shall be sought, but there shall be none; And the sins of Judah, but they shall not be found; For I will pardon those whom I preserve.

Today is that day in your life. Open up the case before the Lord. Deal with all your negative past. Expose all that you have swept under the carpet. Allow God to give you a new clean bill of health. Allow Him to break the yokes of past evils in your life.
