1 ¶ After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew, Bethesda, having five porches. 3 In these lay a great multitude of sick people, blind, lame, paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water. 4 For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water; then whoever stepped in first, after the stirring of the water, was made well of whatever disease he had. 5 Now a certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?” 7 The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me.” 8 Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your bed and walk.” 9 And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked. And that day was the Sabbath.
Limitation is anything that causes restriction; anything that sets a bound beyond which your life must not pass.
There are many things that can constitute limitations to the life of a man:
- Personal factors
- Natural environmental factors
- Demonic factors.
Before we consider these factors one after the other, we must first establish the fact the God who made man did not make him to be restricted or incapacitated by anything.
Gen 1:26, 28
26 ¶ Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
28 Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet
The thoughts of God for man is great
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.
The genesis of all human limitations and sufferings is sin. Man’s disobedience is the root of all his calamity. It all started in Genesis 3 when man lost all that God freely gave him.
6 ¶ So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.
7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings.
It is clear that the first man and his wife chose nakedness and emptiness rather than glory and comfort.
One thing that God will never tamper with is the right of man to make a choice. Adam became the product of his choice. Every man is the product of his choice. You can decide to choose limitations, emptiness, frustration and misery; it is a matter of choice.
If you look back into our text (in John 5) particularly verse 6 ‘When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?”’
I hear the Lord saying the same things to you this day: “do you want to be made well?”.
If you will come out of your limitation, there is a choice you have to make. Do you want God to help you? are you really tired of your situation? Do you want a change?
Looking back to the story, the man who has been in a terrible condition for 38 years could not answer a simple question; he began to tell story.
There is a question you need to answer: do you want God to help you?
If your answer is yes then you need to look closely into this scripture:
1 ¶ Behold, the LORD’S hand is not shortened, That it cannot save; Nor His ear heavy, That it cannot hear. 2 But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear.
You see, sin is the number one cause of all limitations. A man who has not conquered sin, man who has not conquered himself cannot conquer Satan. The greatest enemy of man is the man himself. The most difficult battle was the battle over self. You are your worst enemy. The man that is responsible for your worst limitation is the man you see each time you look into the mirror.
Pro 14: 34
¶ Righteousness exalts a nation, But sin is a reproach to any people.
33 ¶ He turns rivers into a wilderness, And the watersprings into dry ground; 34 A fruitful land into barrenness, For the wickedness of those who dwell in it.
19 “I create the fruit of the lips: Peace, peace to him who is far off and to him who is near,” Says the LORD, “And I will heal him.” 20 But the wicked are like the troubled sea, When it cannot rest, Whose waters cast up mire and dirt. 21 “There is no peace,” Says my God, “for the wicked.”
Are you ready to be made whole? God is always ready; He is always willing. But are you ready also? As long as you are hiding sin under your body, it is impossible for God to help you. Will you be truthful to yourself and break yourself free from all the limitations that sin has brought into your life?
