With a Perfect Heart

2 Chronicles 25:1-2

1 ¶ Amaziah was twenty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem.

2 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, but not with a perfect heart.

In our last discussion, we saw how Hezekiah presented his credentials before God as he was pleading with his Maker to spare his life. Hezekiah said, “Remember now, O LORD, I beseech thee, how I have walked before thee in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in thy sight” Isa 38:3. Hezekiah walked with God with a perfect heart and he was bold enough to state it before his God.

That could not be said about Amaziah. Although he also walked with God, but he did not do so with a perfect heart! It takes God to separate the wheat from the chaff on the matter of walking with God. To the human eyes, walking with God is walking with God.

Men walk with fellow men with their feet but they walk with God with their hearts. For a man’s walk to command a divine acceptance, he must do so with a perfect heart.

Every man around Amaziah must have applauded his walk with God. In the language of the New Testament, he had a form of godliness but denied the power thereof. This was how Apostle Paul described the character of men in the last days. They will look so religious and godly in the surface, but their hearts are never completely given to God.

“Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away” 2Tim 3:5

If it is by outward appearances, men in my generation are great. In my nation, you will see churches raging from inside shops to mega cathedrals in every corner of every street. Men pray here o! Everywhere you hear men calling fire and Jesus! But I tell you, most of these shouting is just religion!

David understood the importance of the heart in our walk with God when he counseled his son Solomon.

“And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the LORD searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts: if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever” 1Chr 28:9

What does perfect heart in our walk with God means?

  1. Sincerity of purpose
  2. Absence of hypocrisy
  • No religious sanctimony
  1. Faithful commitment to perfect obedience
  2. Absence of double loyalty

Those who will walk with God in truth must possess the kind of heart in which He can dwell.

“3 ¶ Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD? or who shall stand in his holy place?

4 He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. Psa 24:3-4

The best of God is reserved for men whose hearts are perfect before Him.

“Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, and that seek him with the whole heart” Psa 119:2

Beloved, check and recheck the state of your heart. Christianity is more a heart matter than the matters of our activities. The hidden part of you is where your perfect before God resides. Guard your heart with all diligence. Never allow Satan, the enemy of your soul to gain dominance over your heart. That is exactly what he will seek to do all the time.

“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life” Pro 4:23

Whatever controls your heart owns your life. Beware!
